For a long time I have wanted to make my own tomato ketchup. Although we are not huge ketchup consumers in our house we do enjoy it with a vegan hot dog and such, from time to time. After making and trying my very own homemade version of ketchup I can honestly say that I won´t ever buy another bottle of it again. It was so easy to make and it tasted so good! The fun thing with making your own ketchup is that you get to design it after your own preferences. This recipe has a slightly smoked flavor but if you are not a big fan of that you may just skip the smoked paprika.
Homemade Smokey Tomato Ketchup
Ingredients:
- 4 dl / 1.7 cup tomato paste
- 3 dl / 1.3 cup water
- 4 tbsp cider vinegar
- 1.5 dl / 0.6 cup sugar
- 2.5 tsp salt
- 1,5 tsp garlic powder
- 1.5 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 0.5 tsp ground black pepper
Method:
- Place all ingredients in a sauce pan and slowly heat while stirring until all the sugar has dissolved.
- Fill some thoroughly washed bottles or jars with ketchup and seal.
- Stored in the fridge it will keep for about one month. If you wish to keep it longer than that you may process the bottles in a water bath for 10 minutes. Use a large saucepan and place a kitchen towel at the bottom. Fill with water and add the bottles when the water is boiling. Make sure they are covered with water by one-two inches. Leave the bottles inside the boiling water for ten-fifteen minutes depending on size. If processed properly they will keep for at least one year.
