Homemade Coconut Sugar Scrub

This homemade sugar scrub is divine. It is made of extra virgin coconut oil and white sugar. For extra coconut scent I have added drops of coconut aroma. Coconut oil is famous not only as an edible oil but also as an excellent skin moisturiser. It gives great protection to your skin. This is a completely natural oil without chemicals and additives and together with sugar you get a beautiful scrub for the entire body.

Why you add sugar to the scrub is because it is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moister from the environment into the skin and also because it is a natural source of glycolic acid. Glycolic acid breaks down the glue that bonds skin cells and helps you getting rid of unwanted dead skin. Of course the small particles of the sugar are making an excellent exfoliant and this also contribute in giving you a healthy-looking skin.

Coconut oil and sugar are the base of this this body scrub. You then add essential oil after need. There are various essential oils with different properties depending on your requirements. For this recipe I added drops of coconut essential oil to give it some extra coconut scent. If you try with another essential oil, add a few drops at a time to make sure the scent doesn’t become too intense.

Recipe for Coconut Sugar Scrub

5 dl / 2 cups coconut oil
2.5 dl / 1 cup sugar ( white or raw )
10 drops coconut essential oil

Place the coconut oil in a blender or food processor and mix it for 1 minute. If you make it by hand make sure to stir it until it becomes smooth and without lumps. Gradually add the sugar a little at a time. Finally add the essential oil and mix it together. Spoon it into a big jar or two smaller ones. If you add a pretty tag you will have a perfect gift!

Note: Without essential oil the scrub is edible but once you add the essence you should avoid putting it in your mouth!
